Puppets

There has been a lot of puppeteering going on in our house recently and since Lily was so poorly she missed The Magician's Daughter we decided it was about time we made our own.

Lily was keen to make the 12 dancing princesses but for the moment we will have to make do with two. Just card and lolly sticks (and some exquisite
painting and stickering by my daughter). Would very much like to make a shadow puppet theatre next and perhaps put on a little show...

Shelves

I finally sorted out a way for Samuel to access his books easily.
Ikea spice rack shelves have worked a treat! A bargain at £3.99 each.

Stolen from here or should I say repurposed.

I think it's a success.

Headbands

I got slightly obsessed by pinterest, which is where I saw this....and got to thinking they might be used to make cute Christmas presents.

So I made lots.
My spirals are much more wavy and I varied the thickness to produce more of an uneven 'rose'. I'm not in to perfection, as you might have noticed.

Then I just glued them on to bog standard headbands with my trusty glue gun.

Lily likes them so I'm hoping others will too.

Bunting Purse

Purse design courtesy of Poppy Treffry, found in her book. Thought they might make great presents and once you have done one they are a breeze, even for a novice like me.

The Princess Party

The Invitations

The Party Favours (Peg Doll Princesses)

More Party Favours (Recycled Crayons)

The Princess Crowns

The Cupcakes

The 'Pin The Kiss on The Frog Prince' Game

The Cardboard Castle

The Cake.

The Party was a great success, we only invited 4 little girls (as Lily was 4) so it made everything totally 'do-able'. I also made hair clips for favours (see below) and sewed little party bags with their initials appliqued on the front. We played 'Hunt the King's Treasure' in the sandpit where the girls dug for necklaces and bubble mixture, which were also popped in to the bags at the end. The party game presents were all fairy tale books illustrated by Jane Ray whose artwork is just beautiful. I can not take credit for a) the cardboard castle or b) the birthday cake, although I would dearly like to.

Clips

Here is a very easy felt hair clip tutorial...

All you need is some felt, offcuts will do, some plain slides and buttons and of course some thread...
I drew the petals free hand but here are some ideas.

I have sewn the felt flowers very tightly on to the clip and then reinforced it with some PVA glue.
There are some great (and probably clearer, more detailed) tutorials out there, here's one and here's another.

Pink Harris Tweed

I laughed when a dear friend bought us a cafetiere cover but now I wouldn't be without it; especially because of the amount of strong black coffee that is drunk in this house and needed desperately after sleep deprived nights with Sam. Here is the reversible one I made for my Mother's Christmas present, sewn form offcuts of Harris Tweed that the same dear friend kindly gave to me.

Coronets (And Kind Hearts)

Lily helped to make these simple crowns, insisting Samuel has one too. She chose the material, ribbons and 'gem stones' and even pushed the treadle for me as I sewed. They have been a great hit with her, worn almost constantly. Sam, on the other hand, prefers to suck his rather than wear it. Made from coloured felt and any old bits and pieces for embellishment.

Change Mat And Dribble Bib

The sewing thing is taking some doing with my 'napping-is-for-losers' baby but sometimes peace descends. During one such moment I managed to make these. The change mat has a soft fleece lining (from an old dressing gown) and room for a couple of nappies and a packet of wipes in the pocket on the front, all neatly held together with a popper/press stud/snap fastener. The popper making machine is currently my new favourite gadget.

Hurrah!

I have a new little person to make stuff for, here he is sporting a pre-emptive dribble bib. Made from ikea fabric scraps and backed with fleece.

Trio of Toy Taggies

Some new taggies for new babies, possibly one for my own...just trying out ideas and using up old scraps. Busy making the most of my free time before baby number 2 arrives :) I have a list of sewing projects to complete and time is ticking...

Baby Shoes

At least the little one will have some shoes to wear, if not a lot else.
Spring inspired booties made using a felted cardigan ( first time felting wool and I loved the results) plus some left over bits and bobs for the daisies. The pattern came from here and there is even a flickr group to show off your designs.

Easter

Easter basket for Wren this year included a wee Easter bunny I made adapting this idea but using vintage fabrics* and a pair of up cycled cords I no longer fit in to. I love the idea of re-using materials and hoard all sorts of torn and out-dated clothes to cut up and re-use, only problem is where to house them all?

*The printed fabrics are remnants my mother kept in her patchwork box and are both from old dresses I wore as a child.

Second Hand Rose

Last year I found a sad looking cabinet someone had put out for the rubbish and decided to re-vamp it. It was warped and made of horrible fake wood veneer, all the shelves were missing and the glass had been broken on one side.
Here is the finished article after much sanding and priming and painting and sawing and stitching and staple gunning. Wish I had bothered to take some 'before' and 'after' pics but you will just have to take my word for it that it looks much better now.

Mobile for Beeba Baby

Here is the beautiful bird mobile pattern from Spool if you would like to have a go. Balancing the birdies was the hard part but it is well worth the effort. I used red embroidery thread to sew the birds on to the branches and several strands of fishing wire to attach the branches together. I found out a bit too late that it helps if you fill the birds up with a little rice too.
